INVEST IN GIRLS AND THEY WILL DO THE REST.

IN CELEBRATION OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S MONTH.

Educate, Empower, Employ.

Committed to creating a brighter future for girls and women in the Dominican Republic.

In the Dominican Republic, girls and women historically faced education barriers, especially in rural areas. Poverty, cultural norms prioritizing domestic duties, and discrimination limit their opportunities and well-being. This results in limited access to education and employment, lower wages, and fewer leadership positions. Early marriage and pregnancy cause many girls to drop out of school.

Initiatives are being implemented to tackle the issues of gender inequality against women and girls, and enhance education and professional development opportunities for them. Nevertheless, there is still much more work to be done to create a thriving environment for girls in the Dominican Republic to reach their full potential.

It is the seemingly insignificant actions that can collectively shape destinies.

WHAT IS MARIPOSA DOING FOR THE GIRLS?

The Mariposa DR Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Cabarete, Dominican Republic. Its mission is to empower girls and young women to create sustainable solutions to end generational poverty. The foundation provides education, health services, and life skills for girls in the local community, as well as support to their families.

Founded in 2009, the Mariposa DR Foundation serves around 150 girls each year. Offering a range of programs including after-school and summer camps, leadership development, health education, and vocational training. The foundation also provides access to health services such as dental care and sexual and reproductive health education.

One of the key initiatives of the foundation is the “Girl Effect” program. It aims to empower girls to become leaders and advocates for change in their communities. The program provides training in leadership, advocacy, and entrepreneurship, and encourages girls to become agents of change in their schools and communities.

Also, The Mariposa DR Foundation is committed to creating a brighter future for girls and young women in the Dominican Republic. By promoting gender equality, education, and health. Through its programs, the foundation helps girls develop the skills and confidence they need to achieve their full potential and make a positive impact on their communities.

HOW IS MARIPOSA HELPING THE GIRLS?

The Mariposa DR Foundation has a range of programs and initiatives that are designed to address the challenges facing girls and women in the community and to promote their well-being and development.

Some of the ways that the Mariposa DR Foundation is helping the community include:

1. Education: provides an education program for girls and young women, featuring after-school academic support, tutoring, mentorship, and leadership development.

2. Health and Wellness: provides health and wellness programs for girls, promoting physical and emotional well-being. The programs include sports, yoga, and nutrition education.

3. Community Outreach: collaborates with families, schools, and organizations to support girls and young women’s well-being in the community providing resources like parenting classes and job training for families.

4. Advocacy: advocates for girls and women’s rights in the Dominican Republic by raising awareness and promoting policies and programs to support their well-being.

Overall, the Mariposa DR Foundation is making a significant impact on the community by empowering girls and young women and promoting their well-being and development. Through its programs and initiatives, the organization is helping to create a more equitable and just society for all.

WELCOME TO THE ULTIMATE INTERSECTION BETWEEN MUSIC, BEACH LIFESTYLE, AND NETWORKING

What To Expect

This year’s Dominican Republic Jazz Festival includes the participation of amazing national and international musicians. This marvelous event is supported by important national entities,  the official sponsorship of the Ministry of Tourism of the Dominican Republic. It is with this support from local and international brands and businesses that have set an incredibly high standard for the quality and overall enjoyment of the event for all of those who attend.

The event will house performances by artists like Buika, the Ecuadorian-Spanish singer known for her great versatility for different musical genres like flamenco, jazz, tango and boleros. The event will also be accompanied by the Grupo Bonye, an acclaimed music group by much of the Dominican population with their recognized music within the guaracha, montuno, traditional son and other genres.

More Than Just Great Tunes

As one of the most awaited Cabarete events, the Dominican Republic Jazz Festival 2022 is not just about listening to great music. Although listening to all the musicians really is the main event and a great choice on how to spend the evening, there is much more to explore within this tune-filled festival. The family friendly environment provides different music related activities for all ages to enjoy.

As previous festivals have had in the past, this year’s Dominican Republic Jazz Festival has an agenda packed with fun and free musical educational workshops, to learn with the guidance of professional musicians. The event will also include jam sessions for those who would like to participate in the music making, sharing their musical talents with family, friends and even complete strangers.

A Motive Behind The Music

This event will not only gather music lovers and enthusiasts to share and enjoy two nights of beautiful art in the form of song, it will also help children from lower income communities have the opportunity of learning how to make their own music. With every concert that is held, more than 80 children of limited resources get the chance of taking classes to learn how to play different musical instruments such as piano, saxophone, guitar, violin, bass and more, all with Jazz being the base of these teachings.

We can assure you, you won’t want to miss it! Spend the weekend surrounded by amazing musicians and enjoy the incredibly unique tunes that each artist brings to the stage. For more information on the event go to drjazzfestival.com.

Cabarete Sostenible

In Cabarete, on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic, over 65% of the population depends on tourism. As a result of the nationwide lockdown, thousands in our local small community of roughly 20,000 are without any resources and are facing food shortages.

“Cabarete Sostenible” is a local project that aims to create a sustainable future through a coalition of NGOs, community leaders, food providers and volunteers, that are striving to solve Cabarete’s food-shortage caused by the COVID19 crisis. The goal is to create a food sovereignty program and enabling communities to feed themselves.

3-Day Trip Dominican Republic: the Mountains. Enjoy this quick weekend itinerary of the heart of the island.

This is the area where the most extreme adventures of the Caribbean are concentrated and you can closely observe the rural life of the country. Arrive at the airport near Santiago and dedicate a day to the city, not forgetting to admire the Dominican paintings of the Centro León. Visit a factory in tobacco and, if it’s winter, watch a baseball game.

The next day, head to Jarabacoa, from where you can access the two national parks Armando Bermúdez and José del Carmen Ramírez, which together occupy much of the country’s central mountain range, including Pico Duarte. In the afternoon you can see the waterfalls, then spend a day or two rafting, canyoning, and mountain biking, or climbing the Pico Duarte.

THE HEART OF THE ISLAND

In this quick 3-day trip to the mountaintops of the Dominican Republic, we will plan a route of things to see. Enjoy the view!

The standard excursion lasts three days, but with another two days, you can also explore the beautiful Valle del Tétero. Relax in the mountain town of Constanza, easily accessible by car from Jarabacoa, with spectacular views and cool weather. Finally, rent an off-road vehicle to overcome the passes and access remote valleys and waterfalls.

DAY 1 (stay 1 day)
Paragliding: Paragliding is a fun, exciting activity, also known as parapenting which means “to fly”. It’s all about staying in the air as long as possible with colorful gliders, that are used for this sport and are made of lightweight hi-tech material, strong and safe for your experience in the air.

How does paragliding work? You make the take-off by running off a mountain, and within a few seconds you’ll be flying. You’ll be guided by an expert who will take care of the jump, the equipment and the flight, right behind you.

We suggest you book in advance with @hawk.parapente – “Parapente en Jarabacoa”.

DAY 2 (stay 1 day)
Hiking: Hike the tallest mountain in the Caribbean, Pico Duarte. There is a camp base where the hiking starts at about 45 minutes from Jarabacoa (driving). Enjoy some beautiful waterfalls while hiking! Bring a swimsuit just in case.

Recommended: El Salto de Jimenoa is a nice trail, easy to follow, and not too long. It takes you all the way to the waterfall (if you do the paragliding tour the waterfall is visible from the sky. The panorama is incredible!)

5-Day Trip Dominican Republic: Samaná. Enjoy this quick but intense itinerary of the northeast of the island.

Visit Península de Samaná in a 5-day trip. Get the most of the northeastern coast in a fun but intense road trip.

From whale-watching to waterfalls, the focus of this itinerary is water. If you can, fly directly to the Aeropuerto Internacional El Catey, the closest to the peninsula, otherwise take a flight from another Dominican airport or a bus from Santo Domingo: with the new road it will be a relaxing journey.

It is preferable to plan the trip between mid-January and mid-March if your goal is to see whales migrate to the Bahía de Samaná.

Stay in Las Terrenas or Las Galeras. Las Terrenas is a cosmopolitan city with a refined European atmosphere. Here you can practice kitesurfing and other water sports; there are also horseback riding tours to the waterfall El Limón and boat trips to the Parque Nacional Los Haitises to see the mangroves and cave paintings. Las Galeras is a quiet town at the eastern end of the peninsula. Its beaches are fantastic, and you will feel like you are in a paradise.

5-Day Trip Dominican Republic: Samaná

THE NORTHEAST IN FIVE DAYS

In this quick route to the northeaster area of the Dominican Republic, the Samaná Peninsula, we suggest you plan a route of things to see, such as:

  • Explore the local towns and islands in the gorgeous Samaná Peninsula (Whale-watching if it’s the season)
  • Hike to the most secluded and wild beaches on the island
  • Swim in the lagoon at El Limón Waterfall
  • Admire limestone formations in Los Haitises National Park

Buckle your seatbelts and get ready for a fun road trip!

DAY 1 (stay 1 day)
If you land in Santo Domingo, you’ll hop on a bus or rental car for the 3-hour transfer north to Samaná. Samaná is known for unspoiled white-sand beaches and hidden islands. Stay at a comfortable hotel to relax after a long trip and head out for a stroll around to get familiar with the location.

DAY 2-3 (stay 1 to 2 days)
Head an hour north by taxi to Las Terrenas. The town is filled with charming boutiques and shops. You can buy souvenirs like handmade crafts, jewelry, Dominican rum, coffee, and cocoa. Local art is big and can be a nice gift or memory of your trip to take home.

For a more active day plan a 3-hour hike into the rainforests as you enjoy stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Here you’ll end up at some of the most secluded beaches on the peninsula. such as La CanaLanza del Norte, and finally, you’ll arrive at tranquil Playa Morón, surrounded by turquoise waters. Tourist crowds are not common here, so you’ll have a blast surrounded by nature.

DAY 4 (stay 1 day)

Enjoy another 3-hour hike to El Limón Waterfall. The falls are one of the top spots around the whole island. 131 feet (40 m) of water ending up in a cold emerald pool, where you can dive and enjoy the cool water after a long hike.

5 day trip samana

DAY 5 (stay 1 day)
Transfer to Los Haitises National Park for a one-day trip. The name “Los Haitises” translates to “mountainous land” in the indigenous Taíno language. The park is known for its limestone rock formations that rise out of the water. Visit exotic mangrove forests around the bay and take pictures of many beautiful bird species. Find the ancient caves and admire petroglyphs, the most ancient in the country. If you prefer, ask a guide to help you organize this fun trip.

7 DAY TRIP DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

In this quick route to the southeastern area of the Dominican Republic, we will plan a route of things to see. Buckle your seatbelts and get ready for a fun road trip!

This ‘southeastern’ itinerary touches all the main tourist attractions of Punta Cana and Bavaro, featuring white sand beaches and crystal-clear water, an iridescent sea for swimming, fishing, or taking a dip between marine life and sunken ships. Punta Cana is also a golfer’s paradise, with 10 golf courses located along the coast, a beach escape with luxurious marinas and gourmet dinners, and a wellness area with the best spas in the country, including the only Six Senses in the Caribbean.

This East Coast taste combines the most ancient city’s colonial charm of the Americas with beach relaxation and chilled lifestyle.

DAY 1 (stay 1 day)
Start with a couple of days in Santo Domingo, exploring the Colonial Zone and experiencing the most typical Dominican experiences. Whether you fly to Santo Domingo or Punta Cana, take a full day to explore the old historical neighborhood of Santo Domingo.

DAY 2-5 (stay 3 to 4 days)
Base in the southeast at Bávaro and Punta Cana, the hub of Dominican tourism with their all-inclusive resorts; if what you desire is simply splashing in the water, this is the place for you.
Many resorts are specially designed to accommodate children, but they also offer activities such as go-karting, bowling, sailing and paragliding. There are also organized trips to the nearby sights, but if you prefer to be autonomous you can rent a car. Singles, couples and nightlife lovers will also enjoy it.

DAY 5-7 (stay 2 days)

Little to the south, on the edge of a national park, stands the small Bayahibe. Here there are the country’s top sites for diving and you can make various excursions, including tours by catamaran to the discovery of Saona Island and snorkeling trips. If you want more privacy, head up the coast to the semi-deserted Playa Limón.
